SAN DIEGO – June 11, 2018 – The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority demonstrated a deep commitment to the community in the last year, spearheading a regional committee to study ways to improve traffic flow on Harbor Drive. It also worked to boost the regional economy, issuing millions of dollars’ worth of construction and procurement contracts to small and local businesses.
Those efforts and others are highlighted in “Aviation Matters: A Sustainability Report for the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.” This annually produced report is now available at sustain.san.org.
This report highlights the Airport Authority’s activities and accomplishments for calendar year 2017. As before, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has guided the development of this report.
The Sustainability Report serves as a useful barometer for San Diego International Airport’s (SAN) relationship to the environment, the traveling public, its stakeholders and the greater San Diego community.
“At SAN, we are business-driven, passenger-centered and community-minded,” said Kim Becker, the Airport Authority’s President/CEO. “That means we are constantly looking for ways not only to improve the customer experience, but also to enhance our relationship with the region and minimize our impact on the environment.”
SAN has defined sustainability as “building an enduring and resilient enterprise by effectively managing our financial, social and environmental risks, obligations and opportunities.” That definition is founded on the concept of a “triple bottom line” using financial, social and environmental yardsticks.
Financial: The Airport Authority is committed to a financial strategy that is flexible, nimble and able to proactively address future changes in the aviation industry and in the overall economy.
Social: The “social” part of the sustainability strategy has two components, the first being an external focus on the community – acting as a good neighbor and responsive regional agency. The second is a
commitment to ensuring the highest level of employee commitment and performance.
Environment: San Diego International Airport occupies 661 acres of sensitive waterfront property. In addition, the airport is a major consumer of water and energy. Therefore, the Airport Authority works hard to preserve and protect the immediate environment – including taking tangible steps to make the airport more resilient to sea level rise – while conserving scarce natural resources.
“This report represents our commitment to transparency and accountability – a cornerstone of sustainability,” said Brendan Reed, the airport’s Director of Planning and Environmental Affairs.

Fairbanks International Airport Baggage Transport Conveyor Enhanced With Mod Drive™ System
Airports face a host of unique industry challenges, such as meeting efficiency regulations and seeking out the best maintenance practices to reduce costs and keep operations flowing. In today’s current economic climate, any potential cost savings can go a long way.
In 2019, Alaska’s Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) sought to modernize its equipment and operations. They were dissatisfied with the performance of the gearmotors on their baggage transport conveyors and began searching for new suppliers. Regal approached FAI with a solution that could improve equipment performance and simplify maintenance, with the added benefit of energy cost savings: the Hub City® MOD Drive™ system.
This white paper discusses the hardware deployed, the test results and the annualized expectations for ROI.
