Nearly 60 girls attend hands-on event exploring opportunities in the aviation industry
MILWAUKEE (September 24, 2022) – Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport hosted approximately 60 enthusiastic school-aged girls for the 8th annual ‘Girls in Aviation’ day. The annual event is sponsored by the Women in Aviation Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter and is dedicated to highlighting the career opportunities available for girls in the aviation and aerospace industries.
“Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport was honored to host this tremendous learning opportunity for girls from across southeastern Wisconsin,” said Airport Director Brian Dranzik. “Events like this are crucial for connecting students to the aviation-related opportunities that will be available to them in the future. I commend the women in aviation here at MKE who came together to help encourage this next generation of aviation enthusiasts.”
Girls, ages 12 to 18, spent the morning at MKE getting a behind-the-scenes look at how an airport operates. They toured aircraft, operated a flight simulator, and had their questions answered by industry professionals during in-depth Q&A sessions. Air Wisconsin, Flight for Life, JetOUT, and Starbase were just a few of the organizations who came together to help educate girls on all of the opportunities available as they begin to consider their future careers.
“Events like Girls in Aviation Day are crucial for encouraging young girls to develop a love of aviation while introducing them to the incredible opportunities within this field that will be available to them as they enter the workforce,” said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. “These girls are the future of the aviation industry, and we can’t wait to see what they do with the knowledge and enthusiasm gained from events held like this one here at MKE.”
The Girls in Aviation Day event hosted at Milwaukee Mitchell was just one of 120 events that took place at airports across the country. An estimated 16,000 girls took part in today’s planned events. “Girls in Aviation Day is an example of what can happen when different organizations come together to promote a shared love of aviation in young students,” said WAI Southeastern President, Joan Kelnhofer. “We’re so grateful for the support of events like this which show girls that their wings already exist, all they need to do is fly.”
