“Avancon ATC (Automatic Tray Circuit) Concept helps to accelerate the Flow at the Security Checkpoints in Airports. “

by | Sep 10, 2025 | News

When flying, you first experience the biggest obstructions in front of the security check area. Often with long traffic jams and unpleasant waiting times.

The new CT (computerized tomography) screening machines are intended to speed things up. CT scanners will be installed in most airports in future. Passengers do not need to unpack liquids and electronic devices, etc. and the operator can easier identify what is in the luggage. – These CT Scanners need the Avancon ATC, an “automatic Tray circuit” to handle the hand baggage automatically and improve the speed of the total system.

This new system for checkpoints at airports is different from the systems we’ve seen so far. And, as with tray returns, the trays run back automatically under the modern CT (computerized tomography) screening machine, invisibly from outside and form a reserve supply along the entire bottom line. – The conveyors are constructed using state-of-the-art aluminum profiles that seamlessly integrate with the contemporary CT machines.

Although The conveyors were not specially developed for these applications, they fit perfectly. Avancon has used its ZPC (zone powered conveyor) concept here, which is standard at Avancon, and it creates automatically a circuit, a continuous circulation of the trays, while at the same time there are always sufficient reserve trays in the lower conveyor section.

In addition, the Avancon ATC concept helps to accelerate the flow. If trays no longer need to be removed from the circuit or inserted. – The Avancon ZPC concept is a conveyor that accumulates automatically with zero-pressure mechanism, anywhere on all conveyors in the entire circuit.

“Otherwise, this zero-pressure accumulation effect in conveyor systems is pretty complicated and expensive,” says Dieter Specht, the co-founder of Avancon. “But not with Avancon. The automatic circuit – with pressure less accumulation of the trays – is not more expensive, because it’s standard at Avancon and used everywhere, for example in large intra-logistics systems or in production and assembly or packing lines.”

Especially at the construction site the entire cabling and the expensive central control cabinet are saved. Just a small PLC may be needed. – That’s a big saving!

The specialty of Avancon is in each zone, which contains already all the control elements and cables as well as the motor and the drive system. All this is already built into the profile of the roller conveyor when the individual conveyor sections are assembled in house. This also includes the software. – The zones communicate with each other and it’s modular and therefore very easy to modify, enlarge or reduce the length of the lane.

The entire system is completely covered with painted and formed metal panels that can be easily removed by one operator.

If sometimes a passenger moves the trays by hand together, there is a software-component, which regulate the normal flow and speed in such a case.

May be that at the end of the lane there a passenger forgot something in a tray, this emits a signal and stopping the flow in front of the vertical lift. Because a camera is installed at the top that recognizes it. – In this case, an operator can take care of it. – Yes, here and there – it doesn’t work without an operator who can give instructions.

Avancon uses rollers of polyamide and with tires made of polyurethane. These materials keep the form and color, are highly abrasion resistant, and glides easily, when trays are moved from the input place to the main conveyor line. –

The diverter or transfer and the internal curves are made of Avancon OTUs (omni-directional transfer units). These units are modular and can move trays and other items in any direction while using less space underneath. They don’t require pneumatics or complicated constructions. The tables are only 163 millimeters high.

“Naturally, we worked close in cooperation with our customers, the manufacturers of the CT scanners, who know the problems of the security checkpoints very well”, says Dieter Specht, “to get all ideas and problems for our engineers to take into consideration, when developing this ATC-checkpoint conveyor system. – Now any producer of X-Ray or CT-Scanners can offer the complete system including the necessary conveyors for Airport checkpoints.”

Avancon offers an easy electronic and mechanic connection (handshake) between the ATC-conveyor system and the screening machine.

Avancon has so far delivered more than 450 basic lines for many airports in the US and in Europe via Analogic and hundreds of OTU tables via Rapiscan worldwide
