International Partnering Institute Recognizes Airport and Contractors for Collaboration on Airfield Project

The construction and engineering team at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has been honored with a 2020 John L. Martin Partnered Project of the Year Award for work to reconstruct Taxiway B at BWI Marshall, which is owned and operated by the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA). The award was presented in August by the International Partnering Institute (IPI), a nonprofit that encourages and supports the construction industry in achievement of exceptional results through a culture of collaboration.

“I congratulate our team for the hard work and dedication that helped ensure a successful project,” said Ricky Smith, Executive Director of BWI Marshall Airport. “This award recognizes the collaboration that produced a major pavement reconstruction to enhance airfield safety and operations.”

Taxiway B at BWI Marshall offers primary access from the north cargo apron and international concourse to the airport runways. The 2019 taxiway project included full depth reconstruction along with mill and overlay of pavement. Additional improvements included associated grading, drainage, lighting, airfield signage and pavement markings. The construction was completed early and under budget.

“Safe and efficient operations are the primary elements of our commitment to Marylanders and all of the traveling public,” said MDOT Secretary Greg Slater. “This project, and the partnerships that made it a reality, help us achieve those goals.”

According to the IPI, its annual awards “celebrate success, share lessons learned and best practices, and acknowledge teams and individuals who achieve extraordinary results.”

The award recognized the project team, which consisted of MDOT MAA as the airport owner; Allan Myers, prime contractor; Michael Baker International, designer; Parsons Infrastructure, construction manager; Airport Design Consultants Inc., program management; and Ventura Consulting Group, facilitator.
