Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with PHL Food & Shops

Traditions, tributes and treats are on the itinerary from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15

PHILADELPHIA — Sept. 19, 2024 — PHL Food & Shops is proudly honoring Hispanic Heritage Month at Philadelphia International Airport with a multitude of events centered on exploring and appreciating the traditions, achievements and experiences of the Hispanic community.

During the celebration period, display tables highlighting books written by Hispanic authors will be stationed outside select retailers around the airport, including Evolve, Heritage Books and Hudson News.

All throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, passengers are invited and encouraged to celebrate and learn more about Hispanic culture through storytelling, authentic food tastings, traditional dance workshops and more.

Performances: Celebrating Hispanic Dance and Music

  • Ritmos y Danzas — Panamanian Folkloric Dance Showcase
    Thursday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m. (on the stage between Terminals B and C)

    Get ready to behold the rhythmic and vibrant movements of Panama’s rich folklore when Ritmos y Danzas performs live in the connector between Terminals B and C. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to witness Panamanian dance traditions spring to life right here at PHL during this special performance.

  • Salsa Dance Workshop — A Free Lesson From Albasario Dance Co.
    Friday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. (in Terminal E)

    This is your official invitation to take a swing at one of the world’s liveliest and most intricate genres of dance. Philly’s own Albasario Dance Co., founded by pro dancer and Latin-dance master instructor Eddie Alba, will visit the airport to give passengers a firsthand education on the basics and history of salsa.

Art: Hands-On Hispanic-Inspired Crafting

  • Art Cart Pop-Up — Family-Friendly Craft Session
    Monday, Sept. 30, at noon and Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. (in Terminal E)

    Art-minded passengers of all ages can put their creativity to use during this stress-relieving, hands-on art activity. Families are invited to participate in the cultural celebration as our junior travelers create their own masterpieces while learning about Hispanic art and traditions.

Food: Exploring Hispanic Culinary Traditions

  • Heritage Talks — “Food From Around the World” (featuring Amy’s Pastelillos owner Amy Rivera-Nassar, Arepa Grub Spot owner Julio Rivas and Juana Tamale owner Jennifer Zavala)
    Thursday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m. (on the stage between Terminals B and C)

    Join Hector Nunez with Wooder Ice and a team of Philly-based chefs for an exciting and informative conversation about global culinary traditions. This free-form discussion panel will explore topics ranging from the influence of Hispanic flavors across communities to the origins of some of the culture’s most classic dishes. Following the forum, passengers can enjoy a delicious taste of Hispanic cuisine, courtesy of OTG Management.

  • El Merkury Sampling Event — Featuring the Famous Churro Bike
    Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. (in Terminal E)

    By way of Guatemala, the iconic Churro Bike will soon pedal its way to a terminal near you. The restaurant El Merkury, known for serving up impeccable, authentic Central American street food, is making a stop at PHL, and you’ll certainly want to save room for dessert when the local eatery arrives at the airport with its sweet signature churros for passengers to enjoy.
