Annual Airport Open House Benefits Special Olympics Virginia

The annual Dulles Day Festival and Plane Pull will return on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Dulles International Airport. More than 12,000 people are expected to attend this free open house on the airfield. Travelers with flight reservations on that date should allow extra time to navigate airport roadways and parking garages. Using Metrorail is encouraged.

The Dulles Plane Pull, sponsored by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department since 1992, is the highlight of the day. Teams of 25 individuals will compete to pull an 82-ton plane 12 feet in the fastest time. FedEx will provide a cargo aircraft, and United Airlines will bring in a passenger jet. In its 31-year history, the Plane Pull has raised nearly $5.5 million for Special Olympics Virginia and its support of more than 21,000 athletes.

The 17-acre airfield site offers runway views and an array of activities for a memorable experience:

  • Aircraft displays, including military, general aviation, historic and commercial aircraft
  • More than 25 classic cars in a car show
  • Kids activities such as a truck pull (with a $10 donation) and play area
  • Airport fire truck rides (with a $5 donation)
  • Mobile lounge tours (with a $1 donation)
  • Live music performances

All proceeds go to Special Olympics Virginia. Cash is preferred.

To minimize parking and traffic congestion, attendees are encouraged to ride the Silver Line to Dulles Metro station. Upon arrival, exit the station and follow signs to the free Dulles Day shuttle that will run continuously throughout the event. Working media should RSVP for expedited parking and event access.
