Annual Airport Open House on September 13 Benefiting Special Olympics Virginia

The highly anticipated Dulles Day Festival and Plane Pull is making its return to Dulles International Airport’s cargo apron on Saturday, September 13, 2025. This free, family friendly event opens a portion of the airfield for a day of fun and excitement, with more than 12,000 visitors expected to attend. Passengers flying out that date are advised to expect heavier traffic than usual on airport roads and in parking lots. For a smoother trip, airport passengers and visitors can take Metrorail to avoid delays and congestion.

The Dulles Plane Pull, organized annually by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department since 1992, remains the signature event of the day. Teams of 25 people will compete to pull an 82-ton aircraft 12 feet in the shortest time. Teams will pull a FedEx cargo plane or a United Airlines passenger jet. Over its 34-year history, the Dulles Plane Pull has raised nearly $6.6 million in support of Special Olympics Virginia, benefiting more than 20,000 athletes.
Spanning 17 acres, the airfield site offers stunning runway views and a diverse range of activities including:

  • Aircraft displays, including military, general, historic and commercial aircraft
  • Mobile lounge tours
  • Kids activities
  • Live music performances
  • Classic car show
  • Airport fire truck rides

Members of the working media should RSVP in advance to receive expedited parking and streamlined access to the event. The public can visit here to learn more about attending Dulles Day. Although admission is free, proceeds raised from competition and activities go to Special Olympics Virginia.
