Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Launches at Seattle Paine Field

Dec 3, 2025 | News

SEATTLE — Seattle Paine Field has joined the global network of airports recognizing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, an international initiative that supports individuals with non-visible disabilities.  The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower provides a discreet way for individuals with non-visible conditions to signal that they may benefit from additional time, patience and understanding as they travel.

“Exceptional service means seeing and supporting every traveler, including those with hidden disabilities,” said Brett Smith, CEO of Propeller Airports. “The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program aligns perfectly with our mission to deliver a more thoughtful and enjoyable airport experience—ensuring that every guest who passes through our terminal can travel with confidence and ease.”

Recently recognized as the 5th Best Airport in America by The Washington Post and ranked 3rd in Newsweek’s Reader’s Choice Awards for Best Small Airport, Seattle Paine Field has earned a reputation for delivering an exceptional customer experience in an atmosphere that is welcoming, relaxed, and enjoyable.  The introduction of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program at Seattle Paine Field is yet another example of Propeller’s ongoing commitment to bring civility back to the airport experience.

“We’re delighted to see Seattle Paine Field International Airport join the global Sunflower network,” said Lynn Smith, Regional Sunflower Director, U.S.A.  “By recognizing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, PAE is helping to create a more inclusive travel experience – one where every passenger feels seen, supported, and understood. We’re grateful for their commitment to making air travel more accessible for all.”

Initially launched at London Gatwick Airport nearly a decade ago, the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower has since grown into a globally recognized symbol spanning industries from transportation to education and healthcare.  Today, approximately 1.3 billion people around the world experience some form of disability.  The Sunflower lanyard offers a simple yet discreet way for individuals with non-visible conditions—such as anxiety, autism, chronic pain, dementia, or diabetes—to indicate that additional support may be needed, fostering a more inclusive and understanding environment.
