| INDIANAPOLIS (May 30, 2025) – The Indianapolis International Airport (IND) set an all-time new record on Monday for the busiest air-travel day ever. A total of 23,473 passengers traveled through the Indy airport on Memorial Day, bypassing the previous busiest-day record of 23,134 set during Super Bowl XLVI in 2012.
“This milestone reflects the surge in Memorial Day weekend travel demand driven by major sporting events and increased airline service, along with seamless coordination across airport operations,” said Marsha Wuster, Indianapolis Airport Authority senior director of commercial enterprise. “A sold-out Indy 500, the Pacers’ playoff run, and expanded nonstop service all contributed to this record-setting day.”
More than 111,000 travelers were expected to fly out of the Indy airport between May 22 – 27.
“The collaboration with TSA, our airline teams, and local hospitality partners played a critical role in delivering a smooth and successful experience for the record number of travelers passing through IND over the weekend,” said Wurster.
Indy airport officials say the 2025 summer-travel seat capacity is up 6% percent over 2024, and the total number of flights up 9% compared to last year.
In May alone, new flights launched out of the Indy airport to Austin on Delta Air Lines, Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas and Los Angeles on Spirit Airlines, Portland on Allegiant Air and Dublin, Ireland on Aer Lingus. In addition, Air Canada relaunched its daily service to Toronto, Canada. Looking forward, June and July rank as second and third on the list for most seats available in a single month.
“Travelers this summer will have more seats to choose from than any summer before,” said Maggie Cunningham, IAA director of air service and airport experience. “Hoosiers now have access to 53 nonstop destinations from IND.” |
