INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 2, 2025) — Oops! They did it again! The Indianapolis International Airport (IND) set a new record in July 2025 with the most passengers flying out of Indy in the airport’s history. A total of 995,818 passengers flew out of Indianapolis in July, breaking the former record set in June 2024.
Airport officials say WNBA All-Star, the Brickyard 400, and Black Expo Summer Celebration, combined with the busy summer travel season, are big contributors to the record numbers.
“It’s all of that and the fact we had 49 nonstop destinations in operation, including our new nonstop transatlantic Aer Lingus flight to Dublin, which was not running in July of last year,” said Maggie Cunningham, Indianapolis Airport Authority director of air service and airport experience.
Multiple airlines saw double digits growth in outbound passenger traffic in July.
Football specialty flights
As summer travel begins to wind down for the year, fall travel is ramping up – and just in time for pro and college football season. American Airlines will offer two specialty routes in September and October for football fans.
Tickets are on sale currently for a specialty nonstop flight to Los Angeles (LAX) on American Sept. 26, arriving in time for the Rams vs Colts game in nearby Inglewood, California. The return flight is scheduled for redeye service on Sept. 28.
Additionally, American is offering nonstop specialty service on Oct. 10 to Eugene, Oregon, arriving in time for the Indiana @ Oregon football game the next day. The flight returns the morning of Oct. 12.
“We work with event organizers to understand the level of demand, and then line that up with the airlines to get Hoosiers to the events they want to attend,” said Cunningham. “The September and October specialty flights to Los Angeles and Eugene, Oregon are examples of this strategy in action.”
New international nonstop route launching later in 2025
In addition to the recent launches of nonstops flights to Chicago Midway via Southwest Airlines and Raleigh-Durham on Delta Air Lines each in August, American will launch its nonstop to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, beginning Dec. 6, 2025.
The Punta Cana flight launch will mark 53 nonstops flights officially in operation out of the Indy airport.
“This will be an all-time high number of nonstops out of IND, and Punta Cana will further expand our international routes – which now include Dublin and Cancun. And there’s more to come with a new seasonal nonstop flight to Cabo on Southwest during Spring Break 2026,” said Mario Rodriguez, IAA executive director.
