Brian Weiler, who has been director of SGF since 2011, announced his retirement today.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brian Weiler, who has been director of the Springfield-Branson National Airport since 2011, informed the Airport Board of his intention to retire summer 2026 during their Feb. 19 regular meeting.

“It has been the honor and privilege of my professional career to lead the airport during this period of strong growth and change,” he told the board. “We have a well-functioning board and great staff team here that will keep things moving forward, and I will do everything possible to help with a smooth transition.”

During his tenure, SGF airline passengers and direct routes have more than doubled and over $100 million in improvement projects have been completed. Notable projects include a new American Airlines maintenance base completed in 2021, expanded General Aviation Terminal in 2024 and multiple upgrades occurring both inside and out to the main Airline Terminal.

However, Weiler said his greatest joy has come from working with young people wanting a career in aviation. He is proud SGF is now home to Ozarks Tech’s pilot and airplane mechanic training programs, as well as Springfield Public Schools’ Fly SPS program.

Weiler has had a 40-year career in aviation, starting as an air traffic controller in the U.S. Marine Corps out of high school. He went on to be a private pilot, aeronautics administrator for the Missouri Department of Transportation, and he managed four other airports in Missouri, Kansas and Florida before coming to Springfield.

“Brian has been an exceptional leader for the Springfield-Branson National Airport, guiding critical growth, record passenger service and strong partnerships that have elevated our regional connectivity,” said City Manager David Cameron. “His dedication to excellence and the community has strengthened not only the airport but also the broader economy of Springfield.”

At 15 years, Weiler is the third longest serving airport director at Springfield, behind Lester Jones, who was director 22 years from 1947 to 1969, and Robert Hancik, who was director 32 years from 1972 to 2004.

Current Airport Board Chair, Jamie Holstein, joined the full board in thanking Weiler for his strong service to the region. The Airport Board will work with the City of Springfield on a selection process to fill the Director of Aviation position.
