Exhibit previously at Bowman Field moves to SDF Rotunda

Louisville, KY (June 14, 2022) – In honor of Juneteenth, the Louisville Regional Airport Authority announces its exhibit, “The Sky’s the Limit: A Celebration of the History of Black Achievement in Aviation,” is on display at the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) this month. For the past two years, during Black History Month, the exhibit has been held at Bowman Field, but now travelers at SDF have the opportunity to see the exhibit and recognize the individuals who have made a difference in the Black aviation community.

“Juneteenth is a nationally recognized federal holiday and is significant to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, but it’s also a day to celebrate African American culture,” said Dan Mann, Executive Director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority. “Holding this exhibit at SDF gives a new audience a chance to recognize the cultural and technological advancements Black individuals have had on the aviation community. We are proud to showcase this important message to all those traveling in and out of our city.”

“The Sky’s the Limit: A Celebration of the History of Black Achievement in Aviation” debuted at Bowman Field during Black History Month 2021 and returned this past February 2022.

Through the use of visuals, visitors can see how Black men and women in history got their start in aviation, any adversity they experienced and how they ultimately achieved greatness and rose to prominence. The exhibit spotlights 14 individuals and organizations, including Bessie Coleman, the first Black woman to receive a pilot’s license, Robert Lawrence, pilot designation as the first Black astronaut, and the Tuskegee Airmen.

The exhibit is on display through June 2022 at the entrances to Concourses A and B in the rotunda area at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. This area is past the TSA security checkpoint and accessible to ticketed passengers.
