Ground load facility will increase occupational capacity and efficiency

SAN ANTONIO (March 27, 2026) – San Antonio International Airport (SAT) celebrated today the grand opening of the Terminal A expansion, which supports both domestic and international operations, and will add new ground-load gates, passenger areas and a federal inspection station for international arrivals.

A key element of the Terminal A expansion is the ground load facility, which increases SAT’s operational capacity, allowing passengers to board aircraft at ground level instead of using jet bridges. The addition of the ground load facility will enable SAT to accommodate more aircraft and move passengers through Terminal A more efficiently. This added capacity will support airlines in expanding service to and from SAT, driving operational growth and helping the airport keep pace with the San Antonio region’s rising demand for air travel.

“This expansion is building a bridge to the future and reflects our commitment to meeting the growing demand for air travel while continuing to deliver a world-class experience for passengers, airlines and our community,” said Jesus Saenz, IAP, Director of Airports. “The expansion of Terminal A is just one step in a broader vision, one that will transform the face of our city and our region. It represents a meaningful investment in our community, ensuring that we are positioning San Antonio for a strong and successful future in air travel.”

This expansion comes at a time when San Antonio ranks among the fastest-growing cities in the nation, and SAT is one of the country’s fastest-growing mid-sized airports, serving more than 10 million passengers annually.

“The Terminal Development Project is creating thousands of jobs, stimulating local businesses and bringing long-term employment opportunities to San Antonio,” said Erik Walsh, City Manager. “Beyond the immediate economic benefits, it is laying the foundation for sustained growth, making our region a destination for innovation, investment and prosperity.”

The Terminal A expansion is part of a larger plan for growth and momentum at SAT and a key component of ELEVATE/SAT, a broader infrastructure development initiative to expand travel opportunities, accommodate increasing passenger demand and strengthen San Antonio’s regional economy. ELEVATE/SAT is the largest capital improvement plan the City has ever undertaken.

Accessibility is a core pillar of ELEVATE/SAT and ensures that the improvements made allow for a positive passenger experience for everyone at SAT. The Terminal A expansion includes sensory-friendly spaces such as quiet rooms and low-stimulation areas designed to make travel more comfortable and inclusive for all passengers.
