PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
- LAX’s new Tom Bradley International Terminal model is featured in the video. At 1.4 million sq ft, it houses 18 gates, nine for double-decker 380 airbuses-the largest commercial airplanes flying today.
- Denver International Airport was Fentress’ first airport project in the 1980s.
- Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea was voted the World’s Best Airport by Skytrax’s 2009 World Airport Awards, a survey of 8.6 million international travelers.
- Currently finishing up a project at IAH in Houston- a terminal for international flights in connection with new FIS facilities. This project includes conceptual and schematic designs, and updates to ticketing and baggage claim.
- In Orlando, they just finished a project implementing facial recognition.
- Currently working on Atlanta making things bigger to accommodate the busy airport, including upgrades to curbside and ticket counters, to produce a more user-friendly experience and a more fluid process for travelers and employees.
- Recent project at Raleigh-after studying some expansion due to growth in the community, this project will provide the capability to increase the number of flights and add more international flights.
RECENT INDUSTRY TRENDS
More international flights, and direct international flights has become an increased priority for many airports.
EIGHT TOUCHSTONES OF DESIGN- “DESIGN FOR PEOPLE”
People are the center focus of designs-prioritizing comfort and convenience, reduced walking distance, assisted walking, ways to speed up the flow of passengers through the building, and making the experience better for people. Key points are better retail, food service, more seating and variety of spaces, bringing daylight into the building, and anything to make the wait time and delays an overall more pleasant experience.
FENTRESS GLOBAL CHALLENGE
Fentress Global Challenge invites students to envision the airport of the future. Some things to expect as a focus in the future of airport design:
- Sustainability and Resilience
- Energy and Fuel Resources/Cost-many airports are recycling garbage to create fuel, and exploring ways to reduce fuel cost.
- Vertical Takeoff-Uber working on UberTaxi. Equipment to change shorthaul flights (500-700 mile flights) by being able to land without a runway will be incorporated into airports in the future.
- Fentress also teaches a class at North Carolina State University working with students on new fresh ideas to bring to the aviation industry.
