Show and Tell – JSM Airports with Blair Cox

About JSM Airports Has a unique service offering, baggage system master planning, design for security systems, sort systems, and construction administration for projects. Have recently worked on projects including complex TSA or CBP processes. JSM also helps airports transition from conventional baggage handling system (BHS) to individual carrier system (ICS). JSM works to find the solution of melded technologies that best fit the individual airport’s needs and capabilities. Recent Industry Trends

  • Becoming more common is a progressive design/build type of procurement method, bringing construction manager into the design process early to be integral to the entire project. This consultation is conducive to bringing in new technologies and ensuring the overall scope of the project is attainable.
  • New tote technology deployed at San Francisco and Orlando are the only two systems that have been certified by the TSA with zero lost bags.
  • SM has also began using vertical lifts within a bag system whereby they can better utilize space for the baggage system.

Conventional BHS vs ICS Biggest difference is the ability to track the bag with 100 percent accuracy, providing more capabilities and service levels able to be met. ICS is an umbrella term covering several different technologies that mean tote systems, tilt trays, mobile inspection tables (MITs), as well as automated guided vehicles. Recent Projects Cincinnati replacing entire baggage system transitioning from ICS using a tilt tray, installing a high-speed transition in the bag system. This resulted in 100 percent tracking and increasing the speed from 300 feet/minute to 1600 feet/minute.
