SLO County Airport Achieves Major Sustainability Milestone with Permission to Operate 940 kW Solar Energy System

Jan 15, 2026 | News

San Luis Obispo, CA – SLO County Airport has reached a significant sustainability milestone with the receipt of Permission to Operate (PTO) for its new 940-kilowatt (kW) solar energy system. With the system now fully operational, much of the airport’s daily operations are being powered by clean, renewable energy generated right here on California’s Central Coast.

The solar installation represents a major step forward in the County of San Luis Obispo Department of Airports’ long-term commitment to environmental stewardship, operational resilience, and responsible use of public resources. By harnessing the power of the sun, SLO County Airport is reducing its reliance on traditional energy sources while advancing regional climate and sustainability goals.

“This project reflects our shared responsibility to protect the Central Coast for future generations,” said District 3 Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg. “Forward-thinking projects like this solar energy system demonstrate how public infrastructure can lead by example—reducing emissions, increasing resilience, and showing that sustainability and smart governance go hand in hand.”

The 940 kW system is expected to offset a substantial portion of the airport’s energy consumption, contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and long-term cost efficiencies. The project aligns with the Department of Airports’ Mission and Values, which emphasize environmental leadership, innovation, fiscal responsibility, and service to the community.

“This is a proud moment for our airport and our team,” said Courtney Johnson, Director of Airports. “Achieving PTO for this system is more than flipping a switch; it represents our commitment to building a forward-looking airport that serves our community while caring for the environment. Sustainability is not a standalone initiative for us; it is integrated into how we plan, operate, and invest in the future of SLO County Airport.”

As air travel continues to evolve, SLO County Airport remains focused on delivering safe, reliable, and welcoming service while making strategic investments that strengthen the airport’s environmental performance and long-term resilience.

With the sun now helping power airport operations, SLO County Airport is taking a clear and visible step toward a more sustainable future powered by innovation, partnership, and sunshine.
