San Luis Obispo, CA – SLO County Airport (SBP) will celebrate Earth Month this April with a series of events and activities highlighting how sustainability efforts are shaping daily operations at the airport.

The Earth Month program will include a mix of public events, passenger activities, and opportunities for airport personnel to participate in hands-on activities, educational displays, and community initiatives focused on environmental stewardship. The events highlight how sustainability is embedded into everyday airport operations while supporting the surrounding community.

A clothing donation drive will take place on April 1 in Parking Lot 4 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Community members are invited to donate gently used clothing and shoes to support Lumina Thrift Store while helping reduce landfill waste.

On April 8, Airport badge holders will have the opportunity to participate in a runway cleanup event, supporting environmental stewardship and enhancing safety on the airfield.

A solar ribbon cutting ceremony and decarbonization showcase will take place on Aprill 22 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The event celebrates major milestones in the airport’s sustainability efforts and highlights ongoing decarbonization initiatives.

“SBP continues to lead by example when it comes to sustainability and environmental stewardship,” said Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg. “These Earth Month activities help connect the community with the important work happening at the airport to reduce environmental impact while supporting responsible growth.”

Passengers will also have the opportunity to take part in sustainability-focused activities throughout the month, including interactive recycling games, sustainable travel choices, renewable energy, opportunities to learn and how SBP is enhancing the local ecosystem.

“At SBP, sustainability is part of how we serve our community every day,” said Airport Director Courtney Johnson. “Earth Month is an opportunity to highlight that work in action and connect our community to the role they play in it.”

SBP continues to implement sustainability initiatives across airport operations, including energy efficiency and decarbonization projects, waste reduction programs, and partnerships that support and enhance environmentally responsible practices.
