Business shower honors graduates of innovative small-business mentorship program
ALBUQUERQUE — The Albuquerque International Sunport today hosted a lively and heartfelt celebration for the inaugural graduates of the Ascend ABQ Retail Kiosk Program. The Ascend ABQ Business Shower, held at the historic Old Albuquerque Municipal Airport Building, brought together city leadership, aviation staff, community supporters, and local entrepreneurs to mark a major milestone for small-business development in New Mexico.
The program, launched by the Aviation Department in February of 2024, aims to empower local entrepreneurs by offering retail space at the Sunport, hands-on mentorship, and real-world business experience in one of the state’s busiest and most high-profile environments. The first-ever Ascend ABQ Class of 2025 includes a diverse group of local small businesses now poised to thrive in the travel retail market.
Mayor Tim Keller joined Aviation Director Richard McCurley, Deputy Director Gary Gilliard and other city leaders to recognize the graduates’ success and the broader economic and cultural impact of the program.
“Albuquerque is packed with passionate, creative entrepreneurs, and programs like Ascend ABQ help turn their ideas into reality,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “By opening up space at the Sunport, we’re not just giving local businesses a spotlight — we’re highlighting how they make our city unique while helping them grow.”
The celebration featured a graduation ceremony and a luncheon as well as product exhibits and shopping opportunities from the participating vendors, showing attendees firsthand the innovation and artistry that define the Ascend ABQ cohort.
“Ascend ABQ is more than a business incubator. It shows what happens when we invest in our own community,” said Aviation Director Richard McCurley. “This program represents our commitment to creating pathways for local success while enriching the travel experience.”
The Ascend ABQ Retail Kiosk Program is part of the Sunport’s broader effort to elevate the passenger experience while supporting local talent. As the program grows, more local vendors will have the opportunity to showcase their products to travelers from around the world.
