New facility key component in future airport development

COLUMBUS – TranSystems Corporation of Ohio has been selected to design a new rental car facility at John Glenn Columbus International Airport that will serve the growing number of airport passengers in a highly visible and accessible location.

Paid for by rental car customer user fees, the new facility will be built on 10 acres near the center of airport property. When the new rental car facility opens in 2020, levels one and two of the parking garage, which currently house rental car operations, will become available to serve the growing demand for public garage parking.

“The new rental car facility will address capacity issues in the garage while also serving as the first key component to positioning John Glenn International for the development of a new terminal,” said Elaine Roberts, President & CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority.

To be constructed in 2018 and 2019 near the site of the future terminal, the new rental car facility will allow travelers to drop off and pick up rental cars from a centralized location. When the new terminal opens, a sky bridge will connect the two facilities. Until then, rental car customers will be bussed to and from the current terminal.

The airport is undergoing a year-long study to determine the capacity of the current terminal. A separate analysis is being conducted to refine the scope and cost of the new terminal and related development. Findings from these studies, which will conclude in the fall of 2017, will determine the timeframe for building the new terminal.

“A new rental car facility and terminal have long been part of the airport master plan,” explained Roberts. “This phased approach to development allows us to serve growing parking and rental car demands while still maximizing the life of our current terminal.”

The nearly $2.5 million contract with TranSystems calls for the design firm to verify the required size of the rental car facility and create 30 percent design drawings by July. TranSystems has extensive experience with designing similar rental car facilities at airports in San Jose, San Antonio and Chicago. Though not legally mandated, CRAA set a 17 percent diverse business participation goal for this project in support of its commitment to working with small, minority and disadvantaged businesses. TranSystems has named Moody Nolan and Resource International as their diverse business partners and has also partnered with the following subcontractors: EMH&T, Jensen Hughes, Stantec, Faithful+Gould, Lerch Bates, KLH Engineers, Schaefer and EDGE Group.
