What Makes SnowPo So Special

by | Mar 16, 2026 | Industry Insider

In a conference landscape crowded with panels, presentations and product showcases, the Northeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives Annual International Aviation Snow Symposium has carved out a distinctive and important niche. Although its agenda and keynote speaker are important to the continued grow of snow removal teams, the combination of symposium content and an authentic spirit of collaboration between airports, industry consultants and suppliers is what showcases the importance of this week.

Recent weather events have reinforced why this symposium is so important. In late January, the East Coast was hit with a nearly record-breaking snowfall. A week later, record snowfall across southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina impacted the region. Lessons learned and contacts made from previous symposiums provided expertise and guidance that allowed airports to remain open, or open as soon as possible.

Now in its 58th year, the Snow Symposium delivers conference content that is practical and relatable. Sessions are grounded in real-world experience, addressing the challenges airport operators face when winter weather threatens safety, efficiency and continuity of service. Rather than abstract theory, discussions focus on what works, what doesn’t, and what can be improved—often drawing content directly from recent storm events and operational case studies. Attendees leave not just informed but better equipped to make decisions when airfield conditions are at their worst.

James Moorhead
In addition to his role as vice president of airport operations for the Allegheny County Airport Authority at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), James Moorhead also serves as chairman of the International Aviation Snow Symposium. He has assisted with the development and curriculum of the International Snow Academies during more than 15 years on the Snow Symposium committee, and still teaches classes for the American Association of Airport Executives and Snow Symposium.

A colleague from a North Carolina airport recently visited and thanked me and the Snow Symposium for helping him deal with the unprecedented snow event the Carolina airports experienced this year. He incorporated the curriculum and applied knowledge learned from our Snow Academy to manage the storm’s impact on his airport operations, opening much sooner than would have been possible without the shared knowledge.

What truly elevates the Snow Symposium, however, is its foundation of volunteerism. Many of the conference’s planners, speakers and moderators are practitioners who donate their time and expertise for the benefit of the broader aviation community. This volunteer-driven model fosters a sense of shared ownership and pride. It also reinforces trust. Participants know the conversations are shaped by peers who understand the pressures of snow operations firsthand, not by distant observers or purely commercial interests.

Equally important is the healthy collaboration that defines the event. The symposium brings airports together with industry consultants and suppliers in a setting that encourages open dialogue rather than sales pitches. Suppliers gain valuable insight into operational realities, while airports benefit from early exposure to emerging tools, technologies and strategies. This two-way exchange creates partnerships that often extend well beyond the conference itself, leading to innovations that improve winter operations across the industry.

Together, these elements give the Snow Symposium its unique position within the conference circuit. It is not just a place to learn, but a place to contribute. Not just a forum for ideas, but a catalyst for collaboration. And in an industry where preparation and shared knowledge can make the difference between disruption and resilience, that combination is not only refreshing, it’s essential.

I would like to invite everyone involved in airport snow removal to attend this year’s Northeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives Annual International Aviation Snow Symposium. Once again, Buffalo, NY, has graciously agreed to host the event, which will be held April 24 to 29.
