SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA — SLO County Airport (SBP) is advancing its commitment to sustainability through a new partnership with the Cal Poly College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, establishing an onsite apiary that is now producing locally sourced honey available for purchase in the terminal.
The apiary is maintained in collaboration with Cal Poly’s beekeeping class students and faculty, providing real-world experience in beekeeping, habitat stewardship, and sustainable agriculture. The presence of managed hives contributes to a healthier local ecosystem and reinforces SBP’s role in supporting environmental initiatives across the region.
“One of the goals of our Sustainability & Decarbonization Plan is to advance a healthy and high-quality airport experience for all users. This new partnership helps promote our unique, environmentally conscious identity to all our passengers while benefitting the local ecosystem through student education,” said Courtney Johnson, Director of Airports.
Located on undevelopable airport land, the apiary supports pollinator health, biodiversity, and hands-on student learning, while demonstrating how operational spaces can be reimagined to serve a greater, broader environmental purpose. Honey produced at the SBP apiary is now available for purchase inside the terminal, offering travelers a locally made product that directly reflects the airport’s sustainability efforts.
“This partnership is a great example of how we can work together locally to support sustainability and education,” said Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg. “By using airport land in a thoughtful way, we’re not only supporting pollinator health, but also creating opportunities for students and strengthening our connection to the community.”
This initiative is part of SBP’s Sustainability & Decarbonization Plan and broader sustainability efforts, demonstrating how even small-scale projects can contribute to long-term environmental impact.
Travelers are encouraged to look for SBP apiary honey during their next visit to the airport.
