Salt Lake City International (SLC) is using several full-scale mockups to ensure that even minute details of key components for its $3.6 billion redevelopment program yield the best results possible.
Not that New Orleans needs a reason to party, but the opening of the new terminal at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International (MSY) will surely merit some hearty celebrations. After nearly four years of construction and four delays of the opening date, the new 35-gate facility is scheduled to open this fall. But before the music plays and confetti flies, the airport has to make the move to its new home on the north side of the airfield.
It's not marketing hyperbole when Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo describes the newly renovated terminal at Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) as a 'next-generation travel hub.' She has plenty of concrete examples to back up the claim. The airport, which serves as a gateway to New York's Finger Lakes Region, is taking passenger services and building automation to the next level with features such as facility systems that link lights and temperature controls to flight activity; cutting-edge technologies that assist travelers with hearing loss; and real-time video of holdrooms to decrease 'gate hugging.?
With annual passenger growth of 7% to 25% over the last four years, Appleton International Airport (ATW) knew it was time to renovate its sole terminal. Last year, ATW became the third-busiest airport in Wisconsin and Bloomberg News ranked it as the fourth-fastest growing airport in the country; but it was still operating out of a facility originally built in the 1960s.
When the Western Concourse is completed, Terminal B will include a total of 35 gates and feature dual pedestrian bridges that span active taxi lanes and connect the main departures and arrivals hall (known as the headhouse) with the two island concourses. In all, there is 1.3 million square feet of new space. The larger project also includes a central hall, central heating and refrigeration plant, parking garage, associated airside development, roadway/bridge infrastructure serving the entire airport and utility upgrades.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) claimed a spot on the industry's architectural and design map for 'placemaking' with a nine-gate concourse expansion it debuted last summer. Architects, designers, consultants and CLT staff collaborated to make the 230,000-square-foot development a destination in and of itself. Together, the team revolutionized the visual aspect of Concourse A with sweeping high-tech windows, digital artwork and new customer amenities.
After two decades of thinking, planning and finally building, Cheyenne Regional Airport (CYS) recently opened its new $18.5 million terminal. As part of the debut celebration, airport, community and business officials gathered with the public on Nov. 4 to welcome SkyWest's first flight into CYS from Dallas/Ft. Worth International (DFW), the first of scheduled daily flights between the two locales.
Passenger traffic has been on a steady rise at Oakland International (OAK) over the last five years, and airport officials are working to make sure the facilities can meet current and future demand. Recent projects have targeted structural integrity and the customer experience as top priorities.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is in the midst of a $130 million project to keep visitors dry as they enter/exit the terminal buildings and enhance their overall experience. The North and South Domestic Terminals are mirror images of one another, each with eight lanes of traffic at their doorsteps and minimal protection from the elements.
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is the fastest growing U.S. airport over the past five years. Passenger traffic has increased by 43%, from 32.2 million passengers in 2012 to 46.9 million in 2017. That's the upside. On the downside, the record growth has resulted in crowded gates and aircraft idling on the tarmac waiting for an open slot. The increasing volume has also inspired the Port of Seattle to look for innovative ways to relieve gate congestion and aircraft backups.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) recently completed a $333 million renovation of Terminal 1 to improve the experience for travelers and offer more operational capacity and flexibility.
With passenger volume expected to reach 85 million by 2037, Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is taking steps to ensure its facilities are ready to meet the needs of passengers well into the future.
