82 candidates sworn in today in Indianapolis as new U.S. citizens

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 4, 2026) – The Indianapolis International Airport (IND) played host to its third annual naturalization ceremony today that welcomed 82 individuals to their new life as U.S. citizens.

Candidates from 33 different countries raised their right hands and took the Oath of Citizenship at around 10 a.m. this morning in Civic Plaza at the Indy airport, surrounded by friends and family, Indianapolis Airport Authority leadership, city, state and federal officials and civic and community organization representatives.

“Every day, the Indianapolis International Airport connects travelers from every corner of the world to Indiana, and there is no more meaningful connection than the one we celebrated here today,” said Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriguez. “It’s our honor to welcome these 82 new Americans, who have proudly completed their journey to U.S. citizenship, and to share this milestone with the families and friends who stood beside them.”

After the candidates recited the Pledge of Allegiance, the oldest of the newly naturalized citizens, Peter Ryan, was presented with an American flag from The International Center.

Ryan, who immigrated from Australia more than 20 years ago, was sworn in at the ceremony today.

“In 2002 I met my future wife, Delores, and we were married in 2004,” said Ryan. “I moved to Indianapolis soon after. Becoming an American citizen is an honor and a privilege, I feel like I’m home.”

Distinguished leaders and guests from the Office of Congressman Andre Carson, and the Office of Congresswoman Victoria Spartz were in attendance. The airport’s Honor Guard, made up of airport public safety personnel, also presented the colors and the Ben Davis Premiers performed the National Anthem.

The Indy airport hosted its first naturalization ceremony in November 2024.

“This ceremony has become one of the most meaningful days of the year at IND,” said Megan Carrico, IAA senior director of public affairs. “For so many people, our airport is the front door to our state. It’s a privilege to partner with the U.S. District Court and our community partners to mark the moment these new citizens officially call Indiana and the United States home.”

Representatives from the Marion County Clerk’s Office and Indiana League of Women Voters were on hand to provide voter registration services following the ceremony. Community partners including IndyGo and the Indianapolis Public Library also shared resources with the new citizens. In addition, new citizens received gifts and recognition from Indy airport officials and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
