Blue Grass Airport to Conduct Full-Scale Emergency Training Exercise

Sep 8, 2026 | News

Airport Operations and Flights Will Operate as Scheduled
Lexington, KY—September 8, 2026—Blue Grass Airport will hold a full-scale emergency training exercise tomorrow, September 9, 2026, at 9:00 am. This exercise, which is required by the Federal Aviation Administration, will include approximately 300 individuals participating from the airport, emergency agencies and the community. It is designed to test the capabilities of the airport and community emergency response staff in the event of an aviation incident.

The exercise involves the active participation of more than 20 emergency agencies, including fire and rescue personnel, emergency management, law enforcement, medical teams and many others. During the simulated event, airport and agency staff will respond to a simulated aircraft incident as if it is an actual emergency. Volunteers from local universities and other organizations will also participate by acting as individuals injured during the incident. A team of evaluators will judge the effectiveness of the exercise and the response of the rescue teams.

A full-scale exercise is required to be held by the Federal Aviation Administration every three years. In years when a full-scale event is not held, the airport and community perform tabletop exercises to ensure continued preparation in the case of an actual emergency.

During the exercise, all passenger flights will operate as scheduled and there will be no effect on airport operations. The event is expected to last several hours to give the responders time to fully simulate the experience of an actual emergency. Passengers and the surrounding community may notice sirens and numerous emergency vehicles during the exercise.
