People are flocking to see the newest art installation at Tampa International Airport (TPA)'the larger-than-life flamingo sculpture in a primary pre-security circulation area of the Main Terminal. For some, the genius of Home by Matthew Mazzotta is more about what it doesn't depict than what it does. Only the flamingo's spindly legs, webbed feet, and brightly colored head and neck are visible, as if airport guests are underwater as the giant bird dips down to find food.
At Edmonton International Airport (YEG), an installation made of plants literally adds tons of oxygen to the terminal every year and removes common airborne toxins.
Passengers traveling into and out of Rogue Valley Intl'Medford Airport (MFR) in southern Oregon will likely recognize the large new mural in the main terminal.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is putting the spotlight on homegrown talent with an exhibit that features artwork by its employees and others who work at the South Florida airport.
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) has its very own slice of the Northern Lights, and it's a doozy. The Aurora is an interactive light sculpture by new media artist Jen Lewin that spirals down from the ticketing lobby of Terminal 1, through an opening in the floor, to the baggage claim area on the ground floor. Named for the aurora borealis, the 29-foot-tall, 740-pound sculpture combines artistry and engineering to celebrate the colorful lights that periodically appear in Minnesota's northern sky.
The newest painting at Centennial Airport (APA) in Englewood, CO, is far too large for a frame. The compass rose, painted by The Ninety-Nines Organization of Women Pilots, adds a crisp, colorful graphic to the ramp outside the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum.
