Project Enhances Winter Operations, Safety, and Equipment Readiness

FREELAND, Mich. – September 24, 2026 – MBS International Airport will officially break ground on the expansion of its Snow Removal Equipment (SRE) Facility, marking a significant investment in the airport’s operational infrastructure and commitment to safe, reliable winter operations.  The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 3:00 pm on October 1, 2026, at the MBS International Airport SRE Facility located at 8580 W. Freeland Rd. Freeland, MI  48642.

The SRE Facility Expansion will provide additional space for the storage, maintenance, and deployment of specialized snow removal equipment used to keep airport runways, taxiways, and aprons operational during Michigan’s winter weather conditions. The project will support the airport’s ability to maintain airfield safety while improving operational efficiency and protection of critical equipment.

By providing additional space and modernized facilities for staff and our snow removal equipment, we can better serve the traveling public, our airline partners, and the communities of the Great Lakes Bay Region.”

The project was designed by RS&H and will be constructed by Three Rivers Corporation, both of whom are partnering with the airport to deliver the facility expansion.  The organizations are identified on the official groundbreaking materials for the project.

In addition to supporting day-to-day winter maintenance activities, the expanded facility will help extend the useful life of airport equipment by providing improved indoor storage and maintenance accommodations. The project is expected to strengthen the airport’s long-term operational resilience while supporting compliance with federal aviation safety standards.

Construction is expected to begin following the groundbreaking ceremony and continue through the project schedule established by the airport and its project partners.
