SACRAMENTO, CA — Sacramento International Airport (SMF) has been awarded $2.37 million from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) to fund three new passenger boarding bridges as part of the airport’s Concourse B expansion.

The FAA announced the $2,371,103 award Aug. 18 as part of a nationwide distribution of AIP grants. The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced nearly $615 million in funding for 238 airport infrastructure grants across 42 states and two territories. SMF was among the airports selected, with its funding specifically designated for the installation of passenger boarding bridges.

“This grant is an investment not only in Sacramento International Airport, but in the future of air travel for our entire region,” said Cindy Nichol, Director of Airports for Sacramento County. “These new gates and passenger boarding bridges will give our airline partners more capacity to serve Sacramento while creating a more efficient and reliable experience for our passengers. We are grateful to the FAA for this investment and to the airport employees whose work behind the scenes helped secure these funds.”

The Concourse B expansion will add more gates to accommodate continued passenger and airline growth at SMF. Each gate will be equipped with a modern passenger boarding bridge connecting the terminal directly to aircraft.

The federal award also allows SMF to leverage outside funding for a project the airport is already undertaking, helping preserve airport resources for other infrastructure needs while advancing improvements that directly support passengers and airline operations.
