is Keeping Local Residents and Pilots Informed —
San Bernardino, Calif. (September 17, 2026) – The SBD Good Neighbor Program continues to serve as an important resource for Inland Empire residents and business owners who want to stay informed about their local airport. Launched in 2020, San Bernardino International Airport’s (SBD) award-winning program educates, informs, and engages community members and pilots about aircraft operations and airport developments while also providing channels for questions and feedback.
Airport neighbors and pilots have come to rely on the SBD Good Neighbor Program and its communications channels for timely updates and information. The program’s resources include a dedicated website, explanatory videos about flight operations and neighborhood noise-sensitive areas, a quarterly newsletter, social media communications, media outreach, and program reviews presented publicly each quarter.
SBD serves as a base of operation for public agencies that provide critical emergency response services in the Inland Empire and beyond, including the US Forest Service Airtanker Base and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Aviation Unit, as well as medical aerial transport companies and government services that utilize SBD in harmony with commercial airlines, cargo carriers, and general aviation aircraft. The SBD Good Neighbor Program explains how the airport and aircraft serve the region, how and where aircraft typically fly, preferred flight procedures, infrastructure projects, news and information, and career opportunities that continue to support a revitalized region.
The positive impact of the SBD Good Neighbor Program can be seen in several ways. Community members have used information shared through the program to provide accurate context about unusual aircraft activity on independent social media channels, including SBD’s role in supporting aerial firefighting operations. The airport also partners with the National FAA Safety Team to provide online pilot forums focused on flight safety and operating procedures between SBD and nearby Redlands Municipal Airport; and hosts airport tours for local high school and college students interested in aviation careers.
The program has earned recognition beyond the Inland Empire. Other airports have looked to the SBD Good Neighbor Program as a model for community connection, and in 2021, the program received an award from Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA), the industry’s largest trade association representing commercial service airports in the United States and Canada.
“Now in its sixth year, the SBD Good Neighbor Program continues to strengthen the connection between the airport and the communities we serve,” said Director of Aviation Mark Gibbs. “By engaging our neighbors, building awareness among pilots, and providing clear channels for information and feedback, the program helps ensure our community has a voice as SBD continues to grow and advance aviation in the Inland Empire.”
