Birmingham, AL – The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport announced today that it has been awarded LEED® Gold for New Construction as established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED® is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of the high performance green buildings.
The Birmingham Airport Authority achieved its LEED® certification for energy use, lighting innovation, water conservation, and material use, as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies. By using less energy and water, LEED® certified buildings save money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community.
“This LEED® certification is yet another positive component of the $201 million Terminal Modernization Project. Congratulations to everyone associated with the project,” said Alfonso Denson, Birmingham Airport Authority President and CEO.
LEED® certification of Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport was based on a number of green design, construction and operational features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community. These features include:
Energy modeling was performed throughout the design process to evaluate energy consumption and to maintain the model, as designed.
Maximizing the utilization of natural daylight to improve passenger experience and to minimize the need for artificial lighting.
High-efficiency light fixtures to minimize energy consumption when artificial lighting is used.
Regional Materials: 44.47% of the total building materials have been extracted, harvested or recovered as well as manufactured within 500 miles of the project site.
Rainwater harvesting to reduce water consumption by building occupants and reducing discharge into the storm water drainage system.
High-efficiency thermal building envelope and solar water heating at public restroom clusters to reduce energy consumption.
Recycled content: 22.66% of the total building materials content, by value, has been manufactured using recycled materials.
Waste management practices were used by the construction manager throughout the project to practice construction activity pollution prevention.
An achievement plaque will be placed in the airport terminal in the upcoming months.

U.S. Green Building Council
The Washington, D.C.-based U.S. Green Building Council is committed to a prosperous and sustainable future for our nation through cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings.
With a community comprising 80 local affiliates, more than 18,000 members companies and organizations, and more than 167,000 LEED Professional Credential holders, USGBC is the driving force of an industry that is projected to contribute $554 billion to the U.S. gross domestic product from 2009-2013. USGBC leads an unlikely diverse constituency of builders and environmentalist, corporations and nonprofit organizations, elected officials and concerned citizens, and teachers, and students.
Buildings in the United States are responsible for 39% of CO2 emissions, 40% of energy consumption, 13% water consumption and 15% of GDP per year, making green building a source of significant economic and environmental opportunity. Greater building efficiency can meet 85% of future U.S. demand for energy, and a national commitment to green building has the potential to generate 2.5 million American jobs.
LEED
The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED green building certification system is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. Over 100,000 projects are currently participating in the LEED rating systems, comprising over 8 billion square feet of construction space in all 50 states and 114 countries.
By using less energy, LEED-certified buildings save money for families, businesses, and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community.
USGBC was co-founded by current President and CEO Rick Fedrizzi, who spent 25 years as a Fortune 500 executive. Under his 15-year leadership, the organization has become the preeminent green building, membership, policy, standards, influential, education and research organization in the nation.

2022 Charlotte Douglas International Airport Report of Achievement
Giving back to the community is central to what Charlotte Douglas International Airport and its operator, the City of Charlotte Aviation Department, is about, and last year was no different.
Throughout 2022, while recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, we continued our efforts to have a positive impact on the Charlotte community. Of particular note, we spent the year sharing stories of how Connections Don't Just Happen at the Terminal - from creating homeownership and employment opportunities to supporting economic growth through small-business development and offering outreach programs to help residents understand the Airport better.
This whitepaper highlights the construction projects, initiatives, programs and events that validate Charlotte Douglas as a premier airport.
