Objet petit a features metal works ranging in scale from palm-sized pieces to
substantial sculptures, one to over five feet tall
(MIAMI, February 13, 2019) – Objet petit a, an exhibition of metal works created by Miami-based artist Adriana Carvalho, is now on display through March at Miami International Airport’s mia Central Gallery, located post-security inside Concourse E. Objet petit a is a term coined by French psychoanalyst, psychiatrist and writer Jacques Lacan.
Objet petit a showcases a wide range of the artist’s work - from her small tin dresses fashioned by food cans to her iconic, life-size metal dress sculptures that she is mostly known for, and embossed prints created by using a special printmaking technique where the artist uses her metal works as templates.
“MIA is proud to feature the work of yet another multi-talented artist based in Miami-Dade County,” said Lester Sola, MIA Director and CEO. “We strive to continually provide our passengers with a broad selection of rotating exhibitions by visual artists from diverse backgrounds and practices.”
Carvalho was born in Brazil and has lived and worked in the U.S. since 1989. She first studied mechanics, welding, and metalwork in her home country, and later found inspiration in the industrial landscapes, public art and architecture of Chicago, where she lived for 10 years. Carvalho has meticulously produced over 1,000 garment sculptures wherein they take up various figurative, cultural and narrative themes and associations.
Based primarily in Miami since 2003, her largest body of work consists of sculptural dress and clothing forms made with manufactured and repurposed metallic objects and materials, mainly consisting of steel, aluminum, brass and copper.
