While many airports have been proactive in engaging the public regarding notification requirements associated with UAS operations near airports, and the FAA has produced several informational notices regarding new and pending regulations, UAS use by airports is currently very limited; however, there is an increasing opportunity for airports to integrate UAS within their existing security programs. The challenge with the use of UAS in airport security is how they may or may not be integrated and what level of integration may be undertaken with existing systems.
In response to this growing need, the National Safe Skies Alliance, as part of their Program for Applied Research in Airport Security (PARAS), partnered with Prime Consultant Faith Group and contributors Woolpert and Futron Aviation Corporation to produce PARAS Report 0012: “Guidance for Integrating Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into Airport Security.” This Guidebook was created to help airport management/staff and UAS operators understand the benefits, processes, and procedures involved in the integration of UAS into airport security programs, while also detailing the limitations and best practices associated with UAS. It describes how UAS can provide a faster response to security alarms, keep visual contact on a situation from a safe distance, track threats, and inspect or patrol facilities as necessary through a consolidated source of information compiled through use case demonstration, other industry research, surveys, and experts. The impact on staffing is also a strong consideration. "UAS enables airport management to project resource capabilities beyond what a typical human workforce can achieve. It provides a force multiplier in many ways and can become an integral part of an airport’s security system."
Whether you need assistance developing your airport’s security program or planning for the use of UAS at your facility, Faith Group has the industry expertise and technical knowledge to execute a cohesive, tailored security program for any sized airport, as well as experience in incorporating these plans into the larger Airport Security Program (ASP) or Security Master Plan.
