Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed a proclamation to designate September 2018 as “General Aviation and Community Airport Month” in the state of Maryland. The official proclamation highlights the importance of general aviation and Maryland’s airport system to the state’s economy and transportation network.
“General aviation and local airports play an important role in our state, connecting communities across Maryland and supporting thousands of jobs for our citizens,” said Governor Hogan. “Our administration remains committed to supporting our local airports and our aviators, who provide an important public service and contribute to our state’s thriving economy.”
Maryland has 35 public-use, general aviation airports across the state. The Maryland aviation system generates and supports 9,368 jobs and more than $865 million in business-generated revenue. The airports serve 7,961 pilots and 2,284 general aviation aircraft.
The proclamation notes that general aviation plays a vital role in the state’s response to emergencies and natural disasters. Rescue operations and law enforcement routinely utilize general aviation airports across Maryland to support their missions.
“We thank Governor Hogan for issuing this proclamation to highlight the importance of aviation and airports,” said Ricky Smith, Executive Director of the Maryland Department of Transportation, Maryland Aviation Administration. “Residents, businesses, and communities across Maryland rely on general aviation to help drive commerce and tourism.”
